An 18-year-old Macomb Township tanning store clerk faces up to five years in prison after he was caught using his cell phone to photograph a customer in the nude.
The longtime customer of Image Sun, in the plaza at 21 Mile and Garfield roads, caught clerk Ryan Woods, 18, of Sterling Heights red-handed on Sept. 19, Macomb County Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Wickersham said.
“He got off the tanning bed and when he looked up, he saw a cell phone with someone taking pictures over the wall,” Wickersham said, explaining the small rooms have only divider walls with no ceilings. “He ran over and tried to grab the arm and the phone. He ran out in the hallway and saw the clerk was standing there.”
A search of Woods’ home, where he lives with his parents, turned up CDs with additional pictures of Image Sun customers.
“We found close to 100 more images of at least 40 different unsuspecting victims,” Wickersham said. “It appears he has been doing it for some time.”
Image Sun management has been cooperating with the investigation, he added.
Released after his September arraignment in 41A District Court in Shelby Township on $7,500 bond, Woods’ next court appearance will take place later this month in Macomb County Circuit Court. He has been charged with capturing an image of an unclothed person, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison, Wickersham said.
