DAYTONA BEACH, FL (NBC) – A Florida woman has been arrested on charges of trying to sell her own 8-week-old grandson, authorities said on Friday.
Patty Bigbee, 45, was arrested after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said she offered to sell the child for $75,000 sale price.
FDLE said that after a series of negotiations, Bigbee agreed on $30,000.
Bigbee and the buyer, an undercover agent, met to complete the deal on Friday in Daytona Beach.
She was arrested after the transaction and the child was turned over to the Florida Department of Children and Families.
“When they showed up, they had all the baby’s belongings, strollers and toys all in garbage bags, transferred from one vehicle to another,” Wayne Ivey of the FDLE said. “They actually did the transaction and exchanged the infant for $30,000.”
FDLE said the child’s mother is in custody on unrelated charges.
Bigbee’s boyfriend was also charged in the case.
Lawrence Works, 42, of Holly Hill, has been charged with illegal sale or surrender of a child, principal in the first-degree.
Works was booked into the Volusia County Jail.
Bigbee’s neighbor Sandy Wells said she has not seen the child’s mom since right after he was born
“Maybe they needed money,” Wells said.
