The HSE Specialist will effectively lead and coordinate the health and safety processes through and with the management team by identifying and anticipating concerns and hazards; working with shift supervision in developing and enforcing systems, policies and procedures; developing training programs; and conducting studies and investigations. The HSE Specialist will be responsible for managing various aspects of safety communication and compliance. This person will ensure the continued development of behavioral based safety programs in Pontiac, Troy and Springfield.
Solid knowledge of relevant safety related federal and state laws and local ordinances pertaining to safety. Knowledge of emerging health and safety trends and regulations associated with each.
Develop and conduct effective HSE training for production, warehouse, laboratory and office environments. Review and update existing training modules to ensure they are compliant with regulations.
Oversee existing HSE programs (e.g. respiratory, lockout/tagout, PPE) to ensure compliance with existing policy, standards and regulations. Conduct safety audits and implement appropriate changes to correct or comply with regulations, standards and company policy.
Effectively communicate across internal functional departments to resolve problems in a timely manner and to work with departments to find alternate solutions if necessary. Possess leadership skills that are capable of generating cooperation and progress at all sites.
Monitors accidents/injuries and develops procedures through incident/accident/near miss reporting to prevent/decrease the accident rate.
Oversee contract security staff, ensure CCTV/fire systems are functioning properly and work with vendors to ensure systems are robust.
Work with behavioral safety committees at all locations and coordinate committee’s safety initiatives to ensure resolution.
Reviews projects such as new site construction, remodeling, etc., for process hazards.
Travel required up to 20% of time

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (OSH, Environmental Management, Fire, Risk Management, etc) is required with a minimum of 5-7 years of safety related experience in a manufacturing setting. The candidate must have knowledge of federal and state OSHA regulations as well as behavioral based safety programs. The candidate must have good verbal and written communication skills, be proficient in technical writing, and have great interpersonal skills to write reports, policy, procedures, and correspondence. The person must also be proficient in MS Office.
