Kem is the perfect example of strength. After bouts with drug addiction and homelessness, the soul crooner has tapped into a spirit of positivity in order to share his gift of music with the world. He waited tables and sang at weddings in order to raise enough money to finance his debut album Kemistry, which he also wrote and produced.
In 2001 his efforts were recognized by Motown records who signed him and re-released his debut. The album reached gold selling status, selling over 500,00 copies in the U.S. In 2005 he released his follow up, Album II that went gold as well. This past August, the Detroit native released his third album Intimacy: Album III—after a five year hiatus—and has been riding high off the success of the first single, “Why Would You Stay.”
Soultrain.com caught up with Kem backstage at the Soul Train Awards 2010 and in this video he talks about what Soul Train means to him, and what a pleasure it was to have performed on the series before it went off the air.
