Will and Jada Smith are teaching their kids to be grown people by letting them pick out their own punishments when they’re disobedient:
*Willow Smith is on lock down from the Net after her parents discovered her being on social networking sites, after being forbidden.
So as a result, the young singer’s computer was confiscated for a month.
However, the punishment was left up to her.
Jada Pinkett Smith discussed the incident with Britain’s Style magazine:
“I told her not to (set up a social networking page), so I was so mad. I said, ‘What do you think I should do now?’ So Willow said, ‘Mom, take my computer away’. And I said, ‘How long for?’ She said a month.”
She continued, “So it’s negotiations. I’m not saying it’s always perfect. I have my bloops and my blunders. But I’m doing my best. Being part of the family she’s from, and working in the industry she’s chosen, she needs some guidance.”
Jada says that she and Will don’t like to lay down “rules” for their children but instead prefer to “guide” them through life, showing them the correct paths to take and hope the choose them.
Says Jada: “We don’t have rules. We come up with agreements. Kids are little people, and we’re in life to guide them. Trying to rule someone is always an illusion, and it’s no different with children.”
As for show business, the same rules apply.
“Being part of the family she’s from, and working in the industry she’s chosen, she needs some guidance. So I’m here to teach her how to look after her late. Willow isn’t the breadwinner. Most times in this situation, a kid is supporting herself and an entire family. She’s not doing it to support a family, so she can do as much or as little as she wants to.”
