A Washtenaw County mother has been charged with second-degree child abuse after police say she hit her toddler with a belt hard enough to cause welts.
Shaunticia Lynnese Kelly, 20, of Superior Township was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond at her arraignment Monday, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Commander Dieter Heren said today.
“Using a belt on a 2-year-old is not something that should be happening, today or 30 years ago,” Heren said.
Another police agency asked Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies to check on the 22-month-old girl at Kelly’s home in the 9300 block of Macarthur Boulevard at 9 p.m. Saturday, Heren said. After they found the toddler covered with welts, they arrested Kelly.
The little girl was taken to University of Michigan Hospital, then placed in the custody of child protective services, Heren said.
The toddler’s great-grandmother – Kelly’s grandmother – said today that she called child protective services to check on the girl last year, too.
“They should have taken that baby a long time ago,” said Maggie Kelley, 60, of Ypsilanti today, adding that she spells her name differently than her granddaughter.
“Every time I think about it, it hurts me so bad.”
A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for April 13.
