Construction crews began their first day working on a long-awaited $221 million makeover of Cobo Center.

The renovation will add 25,000 square feet and reconfigure existing space to create another 100,000 square feet for exhibitions.

The work is the first boost Cobo Center has seen since getting an expansion back in 1989.

The renovation is scheduled to completed in time for the 2014 auto show.
