DETROIT — Well everyone, it’s the weekend. That means weekend construction, and on top of that a freeway is shutting down until Halloween. The Michigan Department of Transportation just released the complete list of construction starting this weekend and beyond.
So where should I start? How about the barrels will haunt us until the fall. How will you get around it? Let us know.
M-39 (Southfield Freeway): In Oakland and Wayne counties, the M-39 freeway will be completely closed beginning at 3 a.m. on Monday and ending in late October.
The full freeway closure, between M-10 interchange in the city of Southfield and M-5 in Detroit, is necessary for pavement reconstruction, utility and lighting upgrades, construction of new barrier walls and bridge work.
During the full closure, traffic in both directions will be routed to US-24 (Telegraph Road). In addition, the section between Grand River and Ford Road will have only a single lane open. The ramp from east and west I-96 to northbound M-39 will close, while the east and westbound I-96 ramp to southbound M-39 will reopen.
Now on to the more temporary barrels…
I-696: In Macomb County, bridge demolition will require the full closure of eastbound and westbound I-696, between Hoover Road and Van Dyke Avenue, starting at 11 p.m. on Friday and ending by 8 p.m. on Saturday.
During the full closure, traffic in each direction will be routed to the service drives. Crews will demolish the U-turn bridge east of Hoover and the second half of the Van Dyke structure.
In Macomb County, ongoing bridge work will require double lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-696, between Hoover and Van Dyke during the overnight hours. The overnight work begins Sunday and ends Friday morning. The overnight restrictions begin nightly at 9 p.m. and end by 5 a.m. the following morning.
In Macomb County, ongoing road and bridge work will require the closure of the eastbound I-696 exit to Groesbeck to be closed from 5 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday, and again from 5 a.m. – noon on Monday. Exiting traffic will be routed to the Gratiot exit.
In Oakland County, detailed bridge inspections will close the three left lanes of eastbound I-696 from Greenfield to Coolidge from 10 p.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. on Saturday. Afterwards, the two right lanes will be closed from 6 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday.
I-75: In Oakland County, beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at noon on Saturday, the right lane of southbound I-75 will be closed from University Drive to Square Lake Road for work at the M-59 interchange.
In Oakland County, starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, the ramp from southbound I-75 to westbound M-59 will be closed for repair. A detour will be posted directing traffic east on M-59 to Squirrel Road to access westbound M-59. The ramp is expected to remain closed until early June.
I-94: In Macomb County, the westbound I-94 exit ramp to 8 Mile Road will be closed for lighting work. The ramp closure begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and ends by 5 a.m. on Monday.
M-59: In Oakland County, beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, the Crooks Road entrance ramp to eastbound M-59 will be closed for 30 days for repair. Traffic will be detoured using Hamlin Road to the Adams Road interchange to access eastbound M-59.
M-3 (Gratiot Avenue): In Macomb County, ongoing resurfacing work will leave only a single lane open on northbound Gratiot from Remick to Sandpiper, and on southbound M-3 from Sandpiper to Cass beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday and ending by 5 a.m. on Monday.
