The “up close” part was undeniable, given the audience’s proximity to the evening’s star, but the 90-minute concert was sorely lacking in any sort of personal touch.
Seeing Jackson in a theater setting holds plenty of promise. She’s used to doing flashy arena spectaculars, so the idea of her stripping down her show for a smaller, more intimate presentation is intriguing.
But instead of retooling her show to present fresh, reconstituted versions of her hits, Jackson has simply scaled down her arena show to theater size. She was still joined on stage by a team of dancers and her show was filled with wall-to-wall choreography, so her show never lived up to the potential of a truly personal evening with one of the biggest hit factories of the last 25 years.
