How to get a mammogram if you can’t afford one
It occurred to me that many women do not know that there are free and low-cost options for mammograms that they can take advantage of. For most women, getting mammograms in your 40s is recommended. If you have a family history, you may want to start earlier. Spring is the perfect time for a health tune-up, and if you don’t have health insurance, then find a place to at least have the mammogram.
Here are some suggestions:
1. Start by contacting your local American Cancer Society. 1-800-227-2345 – ask about clinics in your area that are offering them free of charge.
2. You can also contact the Susan G. Komen helpline at 800-462-9273. There are other such organizations, but these are the best to start with.
3. Call your local hospitals and clinics ask for their community information and find out if they will be providing tests there or at other clinics
For several years I did not have health insurance. I called the Nat’l Cancer Society and got a coupon for a free mammogram each year. they are more than happy to give you one.
P.S. Don’t use the excuse that “it hurts” either. If you ever have stubbed a toe on peice of furniture, that hurts MORE than a mammo.
The Susan B. Komen Foundation has a voucher program for women who cannot afford a mammogram.
