Lauryn Hill released a new song named “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)” this past weekend as a part of her new 5-song deal with SONY.
Hill’s legal troubles have been no secret, owing over 900k in backed taxes, Hill inked the deal with SONY to pay off her debt and avoid prison time.
Well, she released the track a little over a week after announcing the deal, which is very quick for any musician and some think that may have lessened the quality of the track. (It’s no “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”!)
Hill wrote on her Tumblr this past weekend explaining why she rushed to get the track out:
Hello All: Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked! – MLH
