- A group in Ferndale is pushing to legalize marijuana in the city.
The group says it has collected more than 500 signatures; enough to get the issue on the November ballot. They believe the people of Ferndale and their progressive attitude will vote for the change.
The city passed an ordinance legalizing medical marijuana nearly 10 years ago.
But this group aims to decriminalize marijuana possession and use by anyone within city limits. Using and/or possessing marijuana would still result in a civil infraction but would eliminate any jail time.
The group has been targeting other communities as well, looking to pass local ordinances legalizing marijuana. They say it’s to put pressure on lawmakers, in hope of legalizing the drug state-wide.
Recently states like Colorado and Oregon have legalized marijuana.
The group is expected to turn in the petitions at Ferndale City Hall Tuesday morning. If approved, the issue will be on the ballot this November.
