Billups will turn 37 in September and has missed 106 games over the last two seasons due to injury. When he was actually on the court, he was a sluggish off guard. If the Pistons hold a true competition where the better player is awarded the job, we’d expect Brandon Knight to win out. The Pistons’ best play is probably to start both Billups and Knight, while bringing Rodney Stuckey off the bench.
Billups has spoken about leaving a ‘legacy’ with the Pistons and it’s unsurprising that he might stick around Detroit when his contract expires ($2.5 million team option for 2014-15). He hopes to start at PG this season, which could shift Brandon Knight to SG and make Rodney Stuckey a likely trade target.
