Michigan Central Depot may be abandoned but that could change soon. According to Fox 2, earlier this week news broke that the Maroun family, which owns the Michigan Central Depot, requested permits for more then 600 thousand dollars worth of work. The money will be used for safety improvements and a nine thousand pound capacity freight elevator.
Renovation crews are tight lipped at the scene so we asked our resident architect what he thought.
Late in the day, Fox 2 received this statement from depot spokesman Mickey Blashfield, NBIT. Inc.:
“A new freight elevator is the next step of work on the Michigan Central Depot and will allow the smooth installation of windows and roof work as we continue to prepare the building for a new day.”
About half a dozen new windows have popped up at the old train station since late last year.
Investors have poured more than four million dollars into interior enhancements, electricity repairs, security and asbestos and water removal. That broad statement leaves a lot to the imagination, and for now that’s all we have.
