There’s no need for folks to get their knickers in a bunch at the Australian Open. Certainly not on the subject of whether Venus Williams has been giving command performances while going ”commando” regarding her tennis attire.
”I am wearing undershorts the same color as my skin, so it gives the slits in my dress the full effect,” she said.
Asked after her match Monday about people writing stories about her undergarments and paying more attention to her outfit than to her chances of winning the tournament, Williams said, ”I can’t tell people to take my game seriously or not. I mean, if I got involved in all that ‑‑ you know, I can’t tell people what to write, what to do. I’m really not into all that.”
Earlier in the tournament, she had spoken of the outfit:
”Yeah, this is completely my design. I kind of just sketched it out. It was a process. Over time it was one of my old sketches and kind of got recycled and I kind of sat on it for a while. Finally it came out. The whole idea is just about an illusion, and the illusion is that I’m wearing, like a deep V‑neck. Obviously the most effective part of the illusion are the slits. Then the idea was to wear shorts that were like the same color as my skin, so it works very well apparently.”
Williams used Twitter to dispel any rumors by providing the naked truth.
Asked if she was hearing questions about her attire, she said, ”Like I said, I never read the press. Like I don’t listen to all of that. So it’s kind of hard. I’m not always like in on the latest news. But, you know, like when I’m here, like I hear things.”
