Grosse Pointe Shores — Police have taken two boys into custody on suspicion of stealing a Jeep Cherokee and driving it into Lake St. Clair.
The teens, ages 13 and 14, will be lodged at the Wayne County juvenile detention center, Grosse PointeShores public safety officials said.
Officials said the ignition of the SUV had been damaged to allow the vehicle to be taken. The vehicle had not been reported stolen because police believe the owner was unaware of the theft.
The SUV apparently was stolen from the Chandler Park area of Detroit, said Grosse Pointe Shores Police Sgt. William Nicholson.
Police received a call about 5 a.m. of a person running across Lakeshore Drive near Webber Street, Nicholson said. Officers responding to the call saw the SUV in Lake St. Clair in that area and called for a tracking dog.
The dog found one teen hiding in nearby bushes and another in a parked car, Nicholson said.
Preliminary reports indicate the teens were headed east on Webber when they continued into the lake instead of turning onto Lake Shore Drive, Nicholson said.
He said the windows were up on the SUV as it went into the water and the teens were lucky they were not hurt or killed.
“It could have been real bad,” Nicholson said. “The windows were up. How they got those doors open is beyond me.”
