A 3-month-old baby who was inside a car when it was stolen near Houston, Texas was found Thursday afternoon.
An Amber Alert was issued for Keliyah Cook at about 11:20 a.m. Thursday when the 2005 silver Chevrolet Malibu her mother was driving was stolen at an apartment complex.
Keliyah’s mother, LaNiqua Smith, said she drove to a relative’s apartment and left the car running with the baby inside when she walked about 20 feet toward the relative’s unit.
Smith said she believes a woman who walked past her jumped into the vehicle and drove off.
“We were all running, chasing after the car. She was gone, man,” said Mark Kelly, the baby’s uncle.
Keliyah was dropped off on a doorstep a short time later about 12 miles away.
Mildred Allen said she called police after she and her son heard a baby crying.
“I kept hearing a baby crying. I thought, ‘God, that television. What could they be showing that a child would cry like that.’ So, I heard my son get up and go to the front door. He opened the door and came back in there and said, ‘There’s a baby outside,'” Allen said.
“We’re very happy. Thank God, everything is over with. We got the baby back. Thank God for getting her back safely,” said Mary Robertson, the baby’s grandmother.
Keliyah was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital to be checked out.
Smith could face charges for leaving her baby in the car.
The car has not yet been located.
