DETROIT, MI — The late Fred Meijer was on the minds of his three sons as they celebrated the opening of the retailer’s first Detroit store.
“This would have been his crowning achievement,” said Doug Meijer, who is co-chairman with his older brother, Hank, of the Walker-based retailer that operates 203 supercenter stores across the Midwest. “He would have been so thrilled to be walking around here. He would have loved it.“
The long-awaited project was in the planning stages when Fred Meijer, a pioneer of the grocery paired with general merchandise store format, died on Black Friday 2011, at age 91.
The $20 million store opened at 6 a.m. this morning to customers, but an invitation-only ribbon-cutting party was held the night before on Wednesday, July 24 that was attended by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and other VIPs.
Bing heralded the Meijer store as a message to other potential developers that Detroit would deliver returns on their investments in the city.
The nearly 200,000 square-foot store at the corner Eight Mile and Woodward Avenue won’t be the city’s last Meijer store, say the brothers.
